PUBLIC GESTURE, a part of the group exhibition "the space is which we have dissolved" with Brenden Hendry and Jessie Kitchen, curated by Alexis Moline, Hamilton Artists Inc., Hamilton, ON, 2021.
PUBLIC GESTURE acts as an outlet for public dialogue, engaging with the Hamilton landscape and community through public gestures of claiming and negotiating space. The work questions if identity is still acknowledged, respected, and given allowance if it disrupts and rejects the space it exists within. Through the negotiation of where, when, and how identity can exist by disrupting the landscape with neon pink pasted posters, there is a confrontation of the imposed perceptions and performances of identity, self, body, and being.
Throughout the exhibition, the artist pasted copies of the posters around the Hamilton area (most of which were immediately torn down). Visitors were encouraged to take a poster from a stack and do with it what they will.
